VISHWACHI AND ITS CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS.

rcmwellness

Present day lifestyle has led to many diseases that hamper the day to day life of world population. One of such diseases is vishwachi or cervical spondylosis, affecting the upper limbs. It is a disorder prevalent in the most active period of life. It deprives of the patients ability to perform movements of upper limb, which in turn makes them unable to carry their routine work. Vishwachi is one of the most common type of vatavyadhi found in patients. The word vishwachi is derived from two words- viswa means entire and anc means turned or directed towards. Thus vishwachi literally means spread throughout. Pain often has a neuritic quality- described as throbbing, burning, stabbing, electric shock like and aching. Sometimes it is cramping parathaesia often felt in fingers. It is a common disease affecting the middle and old age group of both sex and is prevalent worldwide with a lifetime incidence of 40-60%.

A degenerative cascade due to age related changes in spinal cord is known as spondylosis. These spondylitic changes may result in direct compressive and ischemic dysfunction of the spinal cord. The degenerative process in osteoarthritis chiefly affects the vertebral bodies, the neural foramina and the facet joints (facet syndrome). When the space between two adjacent vertebrae narrows, compression of a nerve root emerging from the spinal cord may result in radiculopathy (a disease of the root of a nerve, such as from a pinched nerve). Spondylosis is caused from years of constant abnormal pressure, caused by joint subluxation(a partial dislocation), stress induced by sports, acute and/or repetitive trauma, or poor posture, being placed on the vertebrae and the discs between them. The abnormal stress causes the body to form new bone in order to compensate for the new weight distribution. This abnormal weight bearing from bone displacement will cause spondylosis to occur. Poor postures and loss of the normal spinal curves can lead to spondylosis as well. Spondylosis can affect a person at any age; however, older people are more susceptible.

Spondylosis is easily confused with brachial neuritis which is a form of peripheral neuropathy that affects the chest, shoulder, arm and hand. Brachial neuritis affects mainly the lower nerves of the brachial plexus, in the arm and hand. The brachial plexus is a bundle of nerves that travels from the spinal cord to the chest, shoulder, arms, and hands. It usually affects just one side of the body, but it can involve other nerves and other parts of the body, as well. Pain in the cervical and shoulder area is common and may reflect a multitude of conditions. However, when a patient develops neurologic deficits, the list of differential diagnoses becomes shorter. Cervical radiculopathy is the most common condition. Patients with cervical radiculopathy present with cervical pain and neurologic deficits resulting from a herniated nucleus pulposus or an osteophyte. Acute brachial plexus neuritis mimics cervical radiculopathy in several aspects, but the treatments are significantly different. An MRI can very well differentiate the conditions.

Treatment of vishwachi can be evolved as :

  • Abyanga
  • Sweda
  • Uttarabhakthika snehapana
  • Nasya karma
  • Shamanoushadhi
  • Nidanaparivarjana

As only limited conservative and surgical procedures are available in modern medicine for this disease and there is much limitation to use these procedures, there is a need to search for effective treatment in alternative medicine. Ayurveda provides you with a very well established treatment process for these side effects. The benefits of the treatment for the disease along with a good overall health benefit for the patient makes ayurvedic treatments a much better option. And here at RCM wellness centre we provide customized patient treatment and a good prophylaxis too. So if worrying with pain, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

rcmwellness

More than a healing system; Ayurveda is an art and science of living a healthy life. It gives us a guide of how to live, what to eat and how to exercise properly for a better longevity of life. According to Ayurveda every human is unique and so the treatment entirely depends on the individual and the construction of their doshas. Each individual is a constitution determined by the relative proportion of these three doshas- Vata, Pitta, Kapha. The internal environment provided by the doshas is constantly interacting with the external forces which sometimes are capable enough to alter the harmony releasing toxins. Wrong diets, unhealthy lifestyle and incompatible food combinations can also imbalance the doshas. This accumulated toxins when well established starts disturbing the prana or the vitality leading to disease.

Panchakarma is a method of cleansing the body of unwanted wastes. It is unique in its sense as it includes preventive and curative action for various diseases and works best with utilizing the benefits of medicated oils and removing the toxins from our body. Before starting the procedure patient is prepared to receive the full benefits of treatment. This preparatory treatment is called Poorva karma consisting of two main process – Snehan (oleation) and Swedan (fomentation). Panchakarma means 5 karmas or process: –

Vamanam (therapeutic emesis) Here patient is given oil inside and outside oil massage and fermentation for few days. Once the toxins are melted they are given emetic medicines. This treatment is mainly for kapha dominated conditions like asthma, allergy, weight gain and hyperacidityVirechanam (purgation) Here disposal of toxins happens from clearing of bowels. Patient is given a natural purgative that clears up the toxins and is fundamentally used for pitta dominated conditions such as jaundice, colitis, celiac infection.Raktamoksham treatment ensures cleaning the blood and is mainly indicated for the treatment of skin infections such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and local lesions.

Nasyam is an extremely effective treatment for clearing the head area. Nasal drops are given after a delicate head and shoulder massage. It helps in soothing different types of cerebral pains, headache, hair issue, sleep disorder, neurological disorders, sinusitis, chronic rhinitis and other respiratory ailments.

Vasti (Therapeutic decoction enema) Introducing medicated substances through enema is an exceptional art practiced in Ayurveda. Decoctions, oil, ghee, milk are managed into rectum and has incredible positive effects on vata domain the related conditions like arthritis, piles and constipation. After undergoing the main treatment, the internal energy of the body decreased due to the procedure can be re built. Patients are given liquids first followed by semisolids before finally receiving a normal diet. The duration of the panchakarma therapy varies according to the bodily needs of the patient and the choice of the physician. Generally it ranges from 7 days to a maximum of 60 days.

BACK PAIN AND AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

rcmwellness

Back pain has become a common cause of ill health among the world population. Changes in our life style, wrong postures and unhealthy food habits have contributed a major share in this aspect. Back pain gets often neglected during its primary course by the people. It’s when the pain starts to interfere with the daily activities, people generally seek medical advice. This makes the treatment more unmanageable and time consuming. Seeking medical attention during an early phase and maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps to reduce the grievous consequences of back pain.

In Ayurveda most cases of back pain can be attributed to the vitiated Vata dosha. But other doshas can also be involved in the pathology. It is to be noted that back pain is just a symptom not a disease. So any case of back pain should be studied and examined properly and then treated accordingly. Back pain can be acute and chronic. It can occur due to various causes like – poor posture habit, osteoporosis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, arthritis, infection, tumor, fibromyalgia, nerve affections, or a fall or blow to the back.

Ayurvedic treatment for back pain involves the use of kashayas, ghritas, poultices (kizhi) and Abhyanga (massage with herbal oils) followed by a herbal bath. Early stages of pathology can be treated with internal medicines and proper exercises. But majority of the case need to be managed with massage and other ayurvedic procedures in conjugation with medicines. Herbs used in the poultices and the herbal oils are carefully selected according to personal peculiarities and the intensity and cause of the disease. Following a strict diet and appropriate exercise during the course of treatment is equally important. Kalari marma massage has also become a part of most of the ayurvedic treatment for back pain. Kalari marma chikitsa is a form of massage in the kalari chikitsa system developed to benefit the warriors of kalarippayttu. It’s an ancient system of musculoskeletal treatment used by the kalarippayattu warriors to treat and prevent their training and combat related injuries. It’s a highly effective treatment for injuries, chronic pain and movement related dysfunctions .It also helps in preventing further degeneration of cartilages and bones and retard the recurrence. Panchakarma chikitsa after kalari massage has given substantial relief for both acute and chronic back pain. Kativasthi is also a popular treatment for back pain in Ayurveda. Here heat is retained in a specific portion of the body using warm medicated oils. A dam is built on the affected area using medicated dough and is filled with herbal oil to a height of 1 to 2 inches and then left to rest for about 45minutes. This procedure helps in relieving pain, tension and swelling and thus rejuvenating your body. These procedures followed in Ayurveda not only relieve your pain but also cleanses the blood and maintain healthy muscles and connective tissue.

THE OTHER SIDE OF SELF MEDICATION

rcmwellness

Modern population who wish to take a greater role in maintaining their own health often think that they are competent to manage their illness. They are unwilling to submit themselves to the inconvenience of visiting a doctor thinking that they can deal with it if sufficient information is gathered, which is readily available at a click. Now most of drugs are available without the prescription of a doctor and the availability of drugs other than in drug shops also contributed to the issue. The adverse effects of such practices should be emphasized to the society and steps should to be taken to tackle the problem.

Self-medication is a global phenomenon. It is very common in conditions like headache, common cold, fever and diarrhea. This self-medication is prevalent in all fields of health care like modern medicine, Ayurveda and homoeopathy. The irrational use of medicine without medical guidance have resulted in inappropriate therapy, missed diagnosis, delayed appropriate treatment, pathogen resistance and increased morbidity. There is a general notion among the population that herbal remedies are totally safe. But this is a false belief, as any drug, herbal medicines also should be standardized and should be taken only under the guidance of a medical practitioner. Folk medicine which uses herbal remedies based on traditional belief is an alternative medicine quite popular among the world population. Even though there is a genuine side of healing in this system, there is a chance of getting misused by fraud people who declare themselves to be an expert in the field. This often leads to potentially dangerous side effects of folk medicines.

Even modern medicine is dealing with the problem of self-medication . Antibiotic resistance and the superbugs are a part of that. Antibiotic resistance is a naturally occurring phenomenon which cannot be stopped, but can be definitely slowed down by appropriate use of these according to the prescription of registered medical practitioner.

Misuse of prescription drugs is also a growing threat faced by the health care providers. Here people take medicine in the manner or dose other than prescribed or take someone else’s prescription. Completing the full course of treatment, even if you feel better is equally important like the above. Childhood and geriatric illnesses are the other field where we commonly see the misuse of drugs. Majority of childhood illness are even today treated without consulting a doctor. This in turn lead to other major health issues. Old aged people are equally vulnerable to such consequences due to the bodily changes they equired during the aging process. To curtail this dangerous use of drugs in self medication, reforms in production and distribution and standardization of drugs at national level and education at the community level are recommended. It would be always safe if the people using the drugs have sufficient knowledge about its dose, time of intake and side effects of the drug. Doctors should be encouraged to educate the patients about the same during the first visit of the patient make sure that the course of the treatment will be completed by the patient. In developing and underdeveloped countries even poverty can become a cause of incomplete treatment. Measures should be taken that medical support is available in sufficiency and drugs for highly prevalent diseases available at minimum cost. It is also noted that the drugs which are only available with prescription in developed countries are available without prescription in developing countries. So there is definitely a need to augment awareness and Implement legislations to promote judicious and safe drug practices.

FEVER IS NOT A DISEASE

rcmwellness

Fever is an elevated body temperature of >37.8 C orally. Fever occurs when the body’s thermostat which is located in the hypothalamus resets the set point at a higher temperature level. It occurs mainly in response to an infection. There is exogenous and endogenous pyrogen that causes fever. Exogenous pyrogens are microbes or their products. Exogenous pyrogen induces the release of endogenous pyrogen which triggers the release of interleukins and cytokines. These reset the set point of hypothalamic thermoregulatory center thus leading to vasoconstriction and shivering which induce heat production. This continue until the temperature of blood flowing around the hypothalamus reaches the new set point, and thus establishing fever. Action of the antipyretic drugs in modern medicine is to reset the hypothalamic set point downward which initiates heat loss through sweating and vasodilatation.

Due to the inconvenience caused by the fever, people generally try to bring down the temperature using drugs on the very onset. Fever is not a disease, it is just a normal body mechanism. It can be an alarm or alert that that the body sends to understand that it is attacked by a pathogen or any deviation of body’s normal functioning has happened. Studies conducted in medical field have proved that when body temperature increases, it can kill certain bacteria and viruses which are sensitive to changes in temperature. Fever also increase the mobility of leukocytes, enhance leukocyte phagocytosis, and increase the proliferation of T cells. T cells play a major role in enhancing the immune response by increasing the antibody production by B cells, defense at mucosal barrier and production of inflammatory response against bacteria, viruses and cancer. Fever can sometimes be the only symptom of a major underlying disease. So taking drugs on the onset of fever may not be a good idea. But on the other hand people die of fever. It is not advisable to wait until the fever subsides by itself. In children a high temperature may lead to febrile seizure. It happens when the body temperature rises too fast. So it is always better to consult a doctor and get investigated on the causes of fever. Self medication without a doctor may lead to wrong treatment, missed diagnosis and unwanted side effects.

Ayurvedic system of medicine deals with the holistic treatment. Fever in Ayurveda is due to the imbalance in kapha and vata doshas. It is always a better way, to deal with the body and correct the imbalances, rather than simply decrease the temperature. Ayurveda offers you a wide range of herbal remedies that can rectify the lack of harmony in our body. These herbal medicines strengthen the body from inside so that our body can fight the disease by itself. The medicines also have antipyretic active ingredients which can bring down the fever. Tulasi, Aconitum, Cassia, Cinnamon, Cumin seeds, Ginger, Onion are some of the herbal medicines used. Self medication with these herbal medicines during fever is a common practice. But it is always safe to get yourself consulted with a doctor, investigations done and medicines taken accordingly

DISTURBED ABOUT MENTAL ISSUES

rcmwellness

Mental disease is as old as humankind.overburdened lifestyle of today has lead to the development of unwanted stress and anxiety.Depression which is very common today can also be a fruit of unorganized way of living. All these factors has lead to the abnormal functioning of the body at the cellular level which gradually progressed into higher levels leading to a new group of diseases called psychosomatic disorders

Psychological factors can directly become the cause of certain diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, migrane, psoriasis and can adversely effect an existing medical condition like diabetes mellitus and cardiac complaints.Evev sexual disorders are mentally related.Negative symptoms of schizophrenia limit the capacity for interpersonal and sexual relationships. The first generation antipsychotics can lead to further decline in erectile and orgasmic functions. It is inevitable that the person suffering from arthritis should follow a strict diet ie, is food regimen. Patients should give up taking solid foods and food in excess. Food which increases acidity like meat, egg etc, should not be consumed. Care must be taken regarding their dental health. They must consult a dentist and get the decayed tooth removed.

This relation of mind and body has been identified centuries ago by the ayurveda acharyas. they understood that the mental state belief and action influenced the physical state and functioning of human system.Ayurveda clearly tells us that a living body requires proper harmony of the system at cellular level and so the ayurvedic system of treatment deals with holistic medicines. Here the mind body and spirit is interrelated and interdependent.

Modern system of medicine has explained this mind-body job as the work of consciousness.Freud has classified the levels of consciousness into three levels of awareness – conscious, precocious and unconscious. The conscious level comprise of all the things we are aware of. The precocious is the level that comprise of memories and are easily retrieved. The unconscious level comprise of things that are outside conscious awareness. These include memories thoughts and urge that we are unaware of.Much of these are unpleasant and conflicting. Our body has its own control system in dealing with these levels. Any disturbance in these levels can come up as emotions, like anger, grief, etc. when the mental plane is overly disturbed these can be expressed in physical plane.

Historical concept of disease was always a battle between God and evil.Mental diseases were considered to be the curse of god. All the unexplained, irrational behavior were considered to be the work of devil. Hippocrates aws the person who gave an idea of physical cause for mental illness. InCharakasamhita written in 600 BC, which is the part of Ayurveda saw ill health as resulting from an imbalance among the three body fluids ( Vatha, pitta, kabha )called Tri-Dosha. Middle ages saw the rise of alchemist. From there to modern era showed us the development of science in the better understanding and treatment of mental illness that includes psychoanalysis, insulin coma therapy and electroconvulsive therapy. But these treatments had its own bad effects.in insulin coma therapy physician deliberately put patient in a low blood sugar coma considering that large fluctuations in insulin level could alter the function of brain. This therapy had a risk of permanent coma.Even the barbiturates and bromides used in the treatment of psychiatric illness has its own side effects

This is where Ayurveda( knowledge of life) has a major role to play and RCM wellness centre can help you in reaching it.

KARKIDAKA CHIKITSA AT RCM WELLNESS CENTER

rcmwellness

Karkkidakam is the moth of rainfall in Kerala and is the last month in the Malayalam calendar. This year karkkedaka masam, starts on July 17 and ends on August 16. This is also a month to visit the enchanting Kerala, when you see the place more green and exotic. The month is also ideal for undergoing ayurvedic therapies as per ayurvedic physicians.

Decades ago agriculture was the main source of income for the people of Kerala. The fury of nature caused a huge economic loss during this season. Even the body was considered to be very fragile and prone to illness. People considered it to be the wrath of Gods. They started worshipping and doing special rituals during this period. Ayurvedic acharyas of that time developed herbal mixtures and oils for the better longevity of life. They considered this season to be ideal for a holistic treatment. Years passed but the habit of indulging oneself in this herbal feast still remains.

The name karkadaka chikitsa refers to ‘karkidakam’ the ‘Malayalam month’ and ‘chikitsa’ the ‘treatment’. The atmosphere remains cool and dust free which makes the treatment more effective. As the monsoon effects each of the doshas in its own way, the treatment during this month is of great importance. The excess toxins accumulated in the body during summer and the sudden shower of rain destroys the balance of the doshas leading to fever, acidity, allergy, inflammations and digestive problems. Karkidaka chikitsa focus on realigning the doshas thereby detoxifying the body, rejuvenating, and boosting our body’s immunity. Even the panchakarma chikitsa in Ayurveda is better done during this season.

Here at RCM Wellness center we have a team of ayurvedic doctors who can guide in having a best experience of Kerala’s ayurvedic monsoon treatment. HEALTHY PERIODS WITH AYURVEDA

rcmwellness

From menstrual cramps to missed periods, these monthly period problems are common. As a natural process, menstruation as such should not cause any health issues. But due to heavily burdened everyday life, stress at house and workplace, many women started experiencing disorders in their monthly cycle. The uneasy situation can make you debilitated and can adversely affect your daily work. Ayurveda can provide you with solutions that really work at the root level and gives the opportunity to regain the balance before more difficult conditions arise.

The menstrual flow is the byproduct of the most basic tissues of the body mainly plasma or rasa dhatu. It carries hormones, vitamins, minerals, water. When this layer is healthy and flows freely, all the nutrients and the waste too has a free flow, so that they may leave the body with ease. Then comes the layer of blood , which is also part of menstrual flow, releasing excess pitta. By paying attention to your flow, its quality and quantity and your experiences before and after its release, you can even get a sense of how the doshas are at play even before they fully come to fruition on a gross level in other layers of the body. This also gives us an opportunity for a better intervention into the physiology of our body, so the measures can be taken for coming back to a stronger balance and therefore, a stronger health.

The menstrual cycle is thought to follow lunar cycle which is approximately 29.5 days. The doshas has a definite role and each dosha will show its face and has specific impact on specific parts of the cycle. Kapha dominates the first half of the cycle, called rutukala when the endometrium thickens and becomes more and more glandular. Ovulation marks the beginning of the next phase, rutavateta kala, dominated by pitta. If the egg is not fertilized, the last phase, rajahkala sets in. It is the sudden rise of vata that begins the menstrual period, enabling the flow of menstruation. In the Vata type of women, the bleeding is relatively less, dark red tinged and often brownish. In the Pitta type of women, the menstruation is copious. The blood can be dark red, purple and there might be clots as well. The menstruation may last 5 to 7 days.

In the Kapha type of women, the menstruation is continuous lasting more than a weak with moderate bleeding. The blood is bright red and can be mixed with impurity of mucus.

As long as the doshas function optimally and are not overshadowed by another dosha, the menstrual cycle functions optimally. Healthy menstrual flow has the following characteristics

  • Bright red in color
  • Does not stain cloth
  • Has an odor that is not foul
  • Has an amount that is on an average, four anjalees. A single anjalee is the amount of liquid that would fit into one of your cupped hands.

The common disease conditions leading to menstrual problems can be:

  • PCOD
  • Uterine fibroid
  • Hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism
  • Endometriosis
  • Obesity
